Archbishop of Canterbury: Church “Colluded” with Sex Abuse
June 22, 2017
Ex-bishop Peter Ball was accused of abusing teenagers over a period of 20 years and was convicted in 2015 of misconduct and indecent assaults. He was released after serving 16 months.
The Associated Press reports Archbishop’s apology came as the church released a detailed report of how it handled the case. According to the report Ball’s conduct “caused serious and enduring damage” to many young men. It also charged that senior levels inside the church supported Ball for many years.
“The church colluded and concealed rather than seeking to help those who were brave enough to come forward,” Welby said. “This is inexcusable and shocking behavior.”
Welby warned that while this case happened years ago, the church shouldn’t let its guard down.
“We can never be complacent, we must learn lessons.”
