Four In One Gospel (Part Four)
Ministry of John the Baptist

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being
governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch
of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, while
Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of
Zacharias in the wilderness.
And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance
for the remission of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah
the prophet, saying: "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the
way of the LORD; make His paths straight. Every valley shall be filled and every
mountain and hill brought low; the crooked places shall be made straight and
the rough ways smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God." (Luke
3:1-6)
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and
saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! For this is he who was
spoken of by the prophet Isaiah..." And John himself was clothed in camel's
hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild
honey. (Matthew 3:1-4)
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written
in the Prophets: 'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare
your way before You.John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism
of repentance for the remission of sins. And all the land of Judea, and those
from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River,
confessing their sins..And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who
is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop, down and loose.
I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for
a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. (John
1:6-8)
"Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, "Brood
of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" (Luke 3:7)
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism,
he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to
come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say to
yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I say to you that God
is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the
ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree which does not bear
good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." (Matthew 3:7-10)
So the people asked him, saying, "What shall we do then?" He answered and said
to them, "He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who
has food, let him do likewise." Then tax collectors also came to be baptized,
and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Collect
no more than what is appointed for you." Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying,
"And what shall we do?" So he said to them, "Do not intimidate anyone or accuse
falsely, and be content with your wages." (Luke 3:10-14)
Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about
John, whether he was the Christ or not, John answered, saying to all,
"I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal
strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and
fire.
"His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out
His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will
burn with unquenchable fire." And with many other exhortations he preached to
the people. (Luke 3:15-18)
Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from
Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed,
"I am not the Christ." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said,
"I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." They said to him,
"Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say
about yourself?"
He said: "I am 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: make straight
the way of the LORD,"' as the prophet Isaiah said." Now those who were sent
were from the Pharisees. And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you baptize
if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" John answered them,
saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not
know. It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap
I am not worthy to loose." These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan,
where John was baptizing. (John 1:19-28)
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, ("cried out" John 1:15) and
said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is
He of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He
was before me.' I did not know Him: but that He should be revealed to Israel,
therefore I came baptizing with water." (John 1:29-31)
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And
John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You,
and are You coming to me?" But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it
to be so now, for this it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness."
Then he allowed Him. Then Jesus, when He had been baptized, came up immediately
from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit
of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice from
heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well please." (Matthew
3:13-17)
And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like
a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to
baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and
remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I have
seen and testified that this is the Son of God." (John 1:32-34)
"Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was
baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended
in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said,
"You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." (Luke 3:21-22)
After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and
there He remained with them and baptized. Now John also was baptizing in Aenon
near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.
For John had not yet been thrown into prison.
Then there arose a dispute between some of John's disciples and the Jews about
purification. And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with
you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified-behold, He is baptizing, and
all are coming to Him!"
John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given
to him from heaven. "You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not
the Christ,' but, I have been sent before Him.' He who has the bride is the
bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices
greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled.
"He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above
all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes
from heaven is above all. And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies;
and no one receives His testimony. He who has received His testimony has certified
that God is true.
For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the
Spirit by measure. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His
hand. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe
the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:22-36
But Herod the tetrarach, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother
Philip's wife ("for he had married her" Mark 6:17b), and for all the evils which
Herod had done, also added this, above all, that he ("had sent and laid hold
of John, and bound him" Mark 6:17a) shut John up in prison. (Luke 3:19-20) For
John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.
Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could
not." (Mark 6:18-19)

by G.T.Panell] Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city
called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. And
when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried
out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from
the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said
to her, "Do not weep."
Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And he who was dead
sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. Then fear came
upon all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen up among
us"; and, "God has visited His people." And this report about Him went throughout
all Judea and all the surrounding region.
(Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples,
that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities, Matthew
11:1)
Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. And
John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus,
saying, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" When the men had
come to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, 'Are You
the Coming One, or do we look for another?'"
And that very hour He cured many people of their infirmities,
afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many who were blind He gave sight.
Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things you have
seen and heard: that the blind see ("receive their sight" Matthew 11:5), the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised ("up" Matthew 11:5), the poor have the gospel
preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me."
When the messengers of John had departed ("as they departed" Matthew 11:7),
He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into
the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to
see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled
and live in luxury are in kings' courts. But what did you go out to see? A prophet?
Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
"This is of whom it is written: 'Behold, I send My messenger before
Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You." "For I say to you, among those
born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who
is least in the kingdom of God ("heaven" Matthew 11:11) is greater than he."
("And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers
violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law
prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah
who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" Matthew 11:12-15) And
when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God,
having been baptized with the baptism of John.
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God for themselves, not
having been baptized by him. And the Lord said, "To what then shall I liken
the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting
in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: 'We played the flute
for you, and you did not dance; we mourned to you, and you did not weep ("lament"
Matthew 11:17).'
"For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you
say, 'He has a demon.' "The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you
say, 'Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
"But wisdom is justified by all her children." (Luke 7:18-35)

And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because
they counted him as a prophet. (for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did
many things, and heard him gladly. Then an opportune day came when Herod on
his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. And when Herodias' daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased
Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, 'Ask me whatever
you want, and I will give it to you.' He also swore to her,
'Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.' So she went
out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask?' And she said, 'The head of John
the Baptist!' Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying,
'I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.' And
the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those
who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her. And immediately the king sent
an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded
him in prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the
girl gave it to his mother. Mark 6:20-28) Then his disciples came and took away
the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard it,
He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. (Matthew 14:12-13a)
