Obama’s State Dept., USAID sued over funding Soros

Barack Obama 2A conservative watchdog organization is suing the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit demanding their records and communications corroborating that millions in federal funding was given to Leftist billionaire George Soro’s Open Society Foundation – Macedonia.

Judicial Watch (JW) President Tom Fitton argues that former President Barack Obama spent nearly $5 million from taxpayers to fund his progressive agenda overseas.

“The Obama administration seemed to bust taxpayer budgets in an effort to fund the Soros operation,” Fitton proclaimed, according to Judicial Watch.

Let the truth be known …

He is calling for President Donald Trump to fully expose Obama’s underhanded dealings.

“The Trump State Department and USAID should get their act together and disclose the details of the Obama-Soros spigot,” Fitton insisted.

Between February 27, 2012 and August 31, 2016, USAID paid $4,819,125 in taxpayer funds to Soro’s Open Society Foundation – Macedonia (FOSM), which partnered with four local civil society organizations, according to the USAID website.

After refusing to provide the demanded information under the FOIA, JW filed suit.

“The suit was filed after both the U.S. Department of State and USAID failed to respond to a February 16, 2017, FOIA request,” JW reported. “The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (No. 1:17-cv-00729)).”

The money was utilized by an Obama-appointed diplomat to influence a strategically located eastern European nation.

“The group had also asked for responsive records of communication sent from Jess L. Baily, an Obama-appointee and former U.S. ambassador to Macedonia, and similar records of the political activities of the Open Society Foundation-Macedonia,” Fox News stated.

Shifting the political climate to the Left via the youth generation in Greece’s neighbor to the north was evidently the project’s goal.

“[The project trained hundreds of young Macedonians] “on topics such as freedom of association, youth policies, citizen initiatives, persuasive argumentation and use of new media,” reads a link from USAID’s website to an Open Society website.

When the State Department was questioned about the political maneuvering with taxpayer money, a representative refused to divulge any information.

“The Department does not comment on matters ‎under litigation,” a spokesperson for the State Department told Fox News.

However, Soro’s group was more open to questioning on the matter, but admitted no wrongdoing.

“The Open Society Foundations spends nearly a billion dollars of its own money a year promoting democracy, human rights and good governance around the world,” a spokesperson from Open Society Foundations expressed in a statement to Fox News. “Our local foundations administer a miniscule amount of US aid. When USAID chooses an Open Society national foundation to administer USAID funds – which go on to NGOs in the field – it is because we have a reputation for transparency, efficiency and professionalism. The work the Macedonia foundation supports has helped the Macedonian people by strengthening healthcare, education, community activism and journalism in the country – often in partnership with the European Union, the United States and the Macedonian government.”

Mobilizing a far-Left youth movement?

Yet members of Congress have voiced concerns that what Baily and USAID are attempting to do in Europe more closely resembles political posturing to secure influence and control in the region.

“Rep. Christopher Smith (R-N.J.), led a group of House lawmakers in writing to Baily demanding answers about whether U.S. tax dollars were being used to fund Soros projects in the small, conservative-led Balkan country of Macedonia,” Fox News’ Brooke Singman informed. “Sen. Mike Lee, (R-Utah), also expressed concerns about USAID money going to Soros’ Open Society Foundations as part of a broader concern that the U.S. embassy had been taking sides in party politics.”

Lee was quick to point out that the Obama administration was pushing its Leftist policies at U.S. taxpayers’ expense.

“I have received credible reports that, over the past few years, the U.S. mission to Macedonia has actively intervened in the party politics of Macedonia, as well as the shaping of its media environment and civil society, often favoring groups of one political persuasion over another,” Lee asserted in a letter he wrote in January, according to Fox.

The following month, a probe into the matter was launched.

“In February, Louie Gohmert, R-Tex., Smith and others called on the Government Accountability Office to conduct an investigation and audit of the State Department and USAID’s activities in Macedonia – including funding of Open Society Foundations entities,” Singman added.

Scrutiny over the Obama administration’s covert dealings to get a progressive regime into power was also pushed by Judicial Watch.

“[T]he conservative watchdog Judicial Watch says its investigation shows the group colluded with the Obama White House to provide U.S. taxpayer dollars to destabilize Macedonia’s democratically elected Right-of-center government,” Newsmax reported.

The Leftist political activism spurred by the former president included getting extremist materials into the hands of impressionable youth.

“[JW] charges the money was used for such activities as translating Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals – a Left-wing activist bible – into Macedonian,” Newsmax’s Greg Richter noted.

The whistleblower group says that the ultra-liberal work is putting dangerous ideas into the minds of youth in a very vulnerable and volatile region.

“The book is a tactical manual of subversion, provides direct advice for radical street protests and proclaims Lucifer to be the first radical,” JW stated. “Thanks to Obama’s ambassador – who has not been replaced by President Trump – Uncle Sam keeps the money flowing so the groups can continue operating and recruiting, sources in Macedonia and the U.S. confirm.”

The watchdog group also sent the warning that Soros’ Open Society Foundation is a force to be reckoned with, putting to use its nearly $1 billion ($930 million) budget worldwide. It is recognized as one of the most powerful philanthropic organizations on the planet.

“[Open Society Foundation] may be the largest philanthropic organization ever built, with branches in 37 countries,”  to InsidePhilanthropy.com states. “While the Gates Foundation spends more money, OSF has a larger footprint worldwide thanks to its many local offices, including throughout Africa.”
