Governor Terry Branstad has signed into law a bill that bans abortions starting at 20 weeks. Jenifer Bowen, spokeswoman for Iowa Right to Life, tells OneNewsNow it features some add-ons that make the bill different than other states’.

“What that included was a 72-hour or three-day waiting period for a woman seeking an abortion, as well as the opportunity to view her ultrasound, view its heartbeat, [and] informed consent basic legislation was also added,” Bowen explains.

But the ACLU believes it is such a hardship for a woman to wait 72 hours and review information provided on the possible physical and psychological consequences of abortion that the organization filed suit in Polk County District Court.

“They sought an injunction on the bill, and thankfully, the court ruled in favor of life, and they actually denied Planned Parenthood’s request for the injunction,” the pro-lifer reports.

And it took Judge Jeffery Farrell less than 72 hours to issue his decision. The lawsuit could go to trial at a later date, unless Planned Parenthood drops it. So far, 20 states have laws that bar abortions starting at 20 weeks, while the bills in three more states have been challenged in court.
