Childless feminist wants childless planet

Gloria SteinemAn aging feminist has a new way twist on advocating abortion: it helps save the planet.

“Listen, what causes climate deprivation is population,” Gloria Steinem, now 83, told a feminist website in a discussion over climate change and feminism.

Steven Mosher of the Population Research Institute says Steinem wrongly believes the planet is overpopulated when in fact there are plenty of resources.

“She also believes, wrongly, that people are the cause of global warming,” says Mosher, “and I believe that global warming is largely the result of natural processes.”

Doomsday predictions over “overpopulation” date back to the 1970s, back when it was predicted an Ice Age was inevitable if the planet didn’t act.

Obama-era science advisor John Holdren advocated for “compulsory abortions” in his 1977 book, arguing such action was permitted under the U.S. Constitution if there is a “population crisis.” He also suggested forced sterilizations after a second child.

Steinem, the founder of MS mmagazine, gained prominence in the 1960s as a Vietnam War protester and became an icon of the feminist movement by the 1970s.

Mosher says Steinem is lecturing others about parenthood and families when she herself rejected motherhood.

“So she is what I refer to as a barren feminist who wants the rest of us to follow her into the grave,” he says.

Steinem was quoted by a British newspaper saying she has no regrets about not having children.

“When The Pill came along,” she said, “we were able to give birth – to ourselves.”

Her supposed concern about the planet is selfishness masquerading as virtue, Mosher adds.
