Husband won’t work

May 4, 2015 By Gary Panell Leave a Comment

Question:  I just read your article on divorce because of financial reasons.  My husband will not work.  He has lied to me and manipulated our finances for 33 years.  He has worked in the past, do not know what happened to the money because we always struggled and we should not have.  But he has not worked for the last 3 years.

He lost his job 3 years ago and now thinks he should not work.  He never did yard work or anything else around the house he does not like.  I work full time and have to do everything.  I am emotionally, mentally and physically drained.   He continues to lie.  I pay all of the bills, which I can hardly afford, and he continues to let me do so.  He has been a wonderful father but not much of a husband.  I am 61 years old and I cannot do this anymore.

Answer: Hi, thank you for writing.  Is your husband a Christian?  Are you a Christian? If you are Christians, him not working is not a Scriptural  reason for divorce.  It is true he should work, the Bible does say: “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”  You may want to share this verse with him, if the Lord shows you to do this. Please pray about it first.  1 Tim. 5:8

You could separate for a while until he realizes that you mean business.  If you are going to stay with him, then you and he need to get into the Word of God every day.  Start praying together.  Get out to church every chance you get.  Start reaching out to others who need the Lord.  The Dead Sea in Israel is dead because it doesn’t have an outlet, water just comes into it.  So, too, in your life and in your husband’s life you two need to start giving yourself away.

There are many ministries you can get involved in.  Right now Franklin Graham has the shoe box ministry, and there are many other such ministries.  You have lost a lot of time.  Sell yourself out to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Set your mind on things above and wholesome things.  “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things.” Phil. 4:8
