Question: Have been reading your site. Can you help with this question: how does one be (come) still before the Lord? It is all very well to say, ‘be still’, and that part of being still is to still the mind. But how does one still the mind? I find myself drifting into thoughts related to verses or hymns I know and rambling on from there. By the way, I find meditating impossible; that is, people say that one should empty the mind etc, and having once associated meditation with being still from a lesson given from the pulpit, I still have not been able to achieve it. Besides, I was not impressed by the preacher telling us to do breathing exercises etc as part of her sermon on meditation. Your thoughts on the ordination of women would also be appreciated.

Answer: I believe God would like for you to read this passage from 1 Kings 19: 11,12 “Then He [God] said [to Elijah], “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” Often God speaks to us in the ‘still small voice’ so we have to be still and listen for it in our lives. We as men don’t like to be quiet and listen, but we have to if we are to hear from God. Also, look at James 5:16b-18 “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.”
Elijah’s power was in getting quiet and listening for God’s still small voice, today we know this is the Holy Spirit speaking to us. You asked about women pastors. I don’t see that they should be the leaders or teachers over men unless as missionaries (until men are trained to teach). 1 Tim. 2:12-14 “And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.”
