IMF denies drumming up crisis to force Greece to reform

(TRUNEWS) The head of the International Monetary Fund is denying claims a crisis is being drummed up to force Greece into economic reforms.
Christine Lagarde was responding to information released by WikiLeaks that claimed IMF leaders were planning an event, as reported by The Telegraph. They made the transcript public.
Lagarde laughed off the report as being a rumor and promised the IMF wants to avoid a crisis.
“The IMF conducts in negotiations in good faith, not by way of threats,” she wrote.

The transcript claimed an “event” would occur to force Greece to accept economic reforms due to the threat of default. The Greeks are $300 billion in debt. There was also talk of asking Germany to help Greece.
In the near future, members of the IMF will go to Athens to discuss ways it can help Greece get out of debt and grow their economy. But, Lagarde said an agreement is “a good distance away”, according to Bloomberg, from giving Greek more loans. Officials from the IMF, European Central Bank, the European Stability Mechanism and the European Commission were scheduled to resume talks Monday in Athens.
In an email, Greece’s government said the leaks show the IMF wants to cause a credit issue and destabilize Europe.
