surgical instruments 2Maryland pro-life groups are disappointed in the response from state medical officials after a doctor was allegedly caught in the act of performing prohibited late-term abortions.

Late one evening in February, pro-life counselors in Forestville, Maryland, noticed lights on at the unlicensed abortion clinic of Harold Alexander. After they notified Operation Rescue, an employee of that organization called Alexander’s office posing as someone seeking an abortion and talked to him about starting abortions on a Friday night and completing them Saturday.

Following is a segment from that call in which Alexander was explaining to the caller a second-term abortion at 17-21 weeks:

Alexander: “So you know you need an ultrasound. An ultrasound would determine where you are and what needs to be done. My suggestion would be you just come in. The ultrasound is $150. We deduct that from the cost of the procedure should you need it.”

The problem is that in 2013 the clinic failed an inspection and the state ordered Alexander to stop surgical abortions and stop administering certain drugs. In addition, the abortionist has had his license suspended in the past for improperly prescribing Viagra to non-patients, sexual boundary violations, and botched abortions.

Following the recent episode, Operation Rescue filed a complaint with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene alleging illegal second-term abortions. The agency wrote back and simply said the complaint will be added to Alexander’s file. The pro-life group’s leader finds that response “unbelievable” in light of the evidence.

“It makes me wonder what it takes to get the law enforced in Maryland,” says OR president Troy Newman. “Without enforcement, laws are meaningless.

Operation Rescue says it will continue to press for action.
