Crowds Visit Ark Encounter in Rural Kentucky
July 09, 2016
They didn’t all come in two by two, but crowds of visitors flocked to a giant life-size replica of Noah’s Ark on its opening day in rural Kentucky on Thursday.
Named ‘Ark Encounter’, the attraction features a 510-foot long (155 meters) boat model built by the Christian group Answers in Genesis.
Answers in Genesis says the boat was built according to its exact description in the Bible’s Book of Genesis.
The group promotes belief in Creation and rejects the scientific theory of evolution. Employees are asked to sign a faith statement attesting to belief in Creation, a requirement that led state officials to pull an $18 million offer in tax incentives in December 2014 and prompted a court battle.
Answers in Genesis has plans for future attractions at the 800-acre (324 hectare) site, which could include replicas of a Tower of Babel or a first-century Middle Eastern village.
Answers in Genesis told Reuters in February that more than 4,000 people made reservations for the July 7 opening.
According to a 2012 Gallup poll that surveyed 1,012 adults, 46 percent of Americans can be described as creationists for believing that God created humans in their present form at some point within the last 10,000 years.
