New video surfaces showing kidnapped Chibok girls

Boko Haram in NigeriaFollowing the weekend release of a Boko Haram video showing some of the Nigerian school girls who were kidnapped more than two years ago, a former congressman and human rights advocate is calling on the Obama administration to do more to rescue the girls.

A video believed to be from the Islamic terrorist group shows a gunman with dozens of the captured girls. The gunman says some of the girls have died in air strikes and demands that fighters be released in return for the remaining Chibok girls.

Former Congressman Frank Wolf, now a distinguished senior fellow at the 21st Century Wilberforce Initiative, tells OneNewsNow he visited the region in February and met with people who were counseling the parents of the victims. It’s a very bleak situation, he says.

“They said the girls would never come back unless America really got involved,” he says. “Secondly, that they all will have been sexually assaulted; third, most would be pregnant or with a child; and fourth, they will have been forced to convert. And the parents were initially very excited when there was [the] #BringBackOurGirls [initiative], but there has not been the follow-through.”

Wolf says the Obama administration needs to do more.

“One of the recommendations that we have made is that the administration have a special envoy – one person designated by the administration and the State Department – to work on the issue of Boko Haram,” he says.

He adds that the people of Nigeria feel forgotten and the country is beginning to fragment.
