Sessions to face Senate colleagues today

Trump and Sen. Jeff Sessions at tableA longtime conservative activist predicts that attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions will be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to begin the confirmation process today for the Alabama junior senator, 70, who was picked by President-elect Trump to lead the Dept. of Justice.

Tom Pauken, who formerly led the Texas Republican Party, says Sessions is liked by both Republicans and Democrats, and liberal Maine senator Susan Collins is leading him around.

“So I anticipate he will be confirmed,” Pauken says.  “I know the liberals are going crazy over this appointment.”

CNN reports that liberal Democrat Chuck Schumer has told Sessions he can’t support his nomination because of his views on immigration and civil rights.

Pauken says Democrats should be worried knowing that the years of liberal control over the Justice Department will soon be over.

“And so I think they’re just fearful that he’s going to be an effective attorney general. He knows where the bodies are buried,” says Pauken.

The CNN story recounts that Sessions was rejected for a federal judgeship in 1986 due to allegations of racism, which Sessions has vehemently denied.

The senator later sat on the same committee that rejected him and, now, will be seated before it seeking confirmation.
