Public Schools Emphasizing Jewish, Muslim Holidays
Students in Virginia’s Prince William County are allowed to skip school for non-Christian holidays while the school calendar makes no mention of Christian holidays like Christmas, Good Friday, or Easter.

December 05, 2017

The Washington Post is reporting that non-Christian students in two Northern Virginia communities are receiving excused absences when they miss school for their religions’ holidays.

Not only that, but the administrations in the Fairfax and Prince William county school districts have forbidden testing on days of, before, and after those same holidays. The Post report states:

Fairfax teachers were directed not to schedule tests on certain religious holidays, and the district sends principals quarterly reminders, district spokesman John Torre said in an email. In Prince William, school district regulations were updated during the summer to say that students who miss school for religious observances would be allowed to make up work and tests.

The change was prompted by a group calling itself Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement, which was formed in 2008 to “take action on key issues in our community including but not limited to affordable housing, access to health and dental care, and immigrant rights.” The group boasts a membership of 50 faith communities and civic organizations in Prince William, Fairfax, and Arlington counties, including the city of Alexandria.
