Deplorables – the gaffe that keeps on giving
Conservatives aren’t taking too kindly to being described as a “basket of deplorables” by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton – but some are making the most of it.
The former first lady’s comments came during a speech to a homosexual rights group last Friday. Her demeaning description was met with laughter from the crowd:
Clinton: “You could put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.”
Former Obama campaign manager Stephanie Cutter told one of the network talk shows that Clinton simply overstated the deplorables:
Cutter: “What she said was not wrong. Her only mistake was that she described half of his supporters that way.”
Not surprisingly, Donald Trump made a campaign ad out of the comments:
Trump ad: “People like you, you, and you – deplorable. You know what’s deplorable? Hillary Clinton viciously demonizing hard-working people like you.”
Trump supporter Dr. Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Dallas told FOX News says it sends a chilling message about what kind of president Clinton would be.
“She is signaling that if she becomes president, there will be no tolerance for conservatives or their ideas in a Clinton administration,” says the pastor.
Bob Vander Plaats of The Family Leader tells OneNewsNow it’s the worst campaign gaffe yet for Clinton.
“What it has the possibility of doing is energizing the deplorables,” he offers. “And I guarantee you, the deplorables aren’t voting for Hillary.”
In fact, as FOX News points out, some of those so-called “deplorables” are embracing the title – and the energized, entrepreneurial types have begun churning out merchandise featuring the label.
