Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Michael F. Haverluck (OneNewsNow.com) A well-known attorney and self-described liberal Democrat says all Americans, regardless of their political persuasion, should be “frightened” by the tactics Democratic leaders are using in their attempt to impeach President Donald Trump.
After extensively reviewing criminal law, Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz contends that the Democrats’ ramped-up impeachment proceedings targeting President Trump’s Ukrainian dealings essentially work to “create crimes out of nothing.” And the Dems’ efforts – when coupled with their unsuccessful “Russian collusion” probe – resemble KGB purges from the Kremlin decades ago in communist USSR, he adds.
“They’re very scary,” Dershowitz said of Democratic leaders heading the investigations while appearing in an interview on the CATS Roundtable radio program Sunday. “They’re very frightening to any civil libertarian – whether you’re a Democrat or Republican; whether you come from New York or the middle of the country, you should be frightened by efforts to try to create crimes out of nothing.”
A communist coup?
As Democrats target Trump for encouraging Ukrainian officials to look into the conduct of 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden, they are apparently looking past the pressure that some say the former vice president allegedly put on Ukrainian officials to fire an attorney seeking to expose his son’s (Hunter Biden’s) business dealings. For that reason, Dershowitz argued that party leaders don’t have a leg to stand on.
“Commenting on the House Democrats’ impeachment investigation based on an alleged quid pro quo with Ukraine, Dershowitz said he has searched the federal criminal statutes ‘from beginning to end – I couldn’t find the crime,'” WND noted.
“It reminds me of [what] Lavrentiy Beria – [former] head of the KGB – said to Stalin,” the renowned legal expert continued. “He said, ‘Show me the man and I’ll find you the crime’ – which … really meant, ‘I’ll make up the crime.'”
Dershowitz
According to Dershowitz, that’s exactly what Democratic leaders are doing.
“And so the Democrats are now making up crimes,” WND quoted Dershowitz. “First they made up collusion. ‘Ahh! Collusion. It’s a crime!’ I searched the statute books. There’s no crime of collusion, except when businessmen get together to collude against the anti-trust laws, but no crime of collusion with a foreign country.
“Then after that, they said ‘obstruction of Congress.’ No, no, no, no, no. Obstruction of justice is a crime; obstruction of Congress is part of our system of checks and balances,” the attorney explained.
The discussion then focused on Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and other White House aides refusing to testify, and the Harvard scholar justified their lack of cooperation.
“If you get a subpoena from Congress, and you’re the president or in the executive department, and you think you have an executive privilege, you have an obligation not to respond,” Dershowitz insisted. “That’s not ‘obstruction of Congress’ – that’s checks and balances under our Constitution.”
Everything and the kitchen sink
The longtime law professor said that at this point, Democrats are just throwing anything at the president, caring little whether it’s true.
“[America is seeing] a desperate effort to try to find crimes against President Trump – they’re just making it up, and that means we are all in danger,” Der warned before noting how Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) alleged that he and various guests on Fox News are “co-conspirators” with Trump. “He’s now threatening people who are commentators – a liberal Democrat like me – who’s a commentator, that we’re in on it, that we’re co-conspirators. It is such a dangerous development to civil liberties.”
The Harvard scholar then addressed how CNN has banned him for not joining in on the Democrats’ anti-Trump conspiracy charges.
“CNN will not allow me on their network because they don’t want a liberal Democrat to be telling their viewers the truth about the Constitution,” Dershowitz asserted. “Instead, they have people out there who are just parroting the party line over and over and over again and misleading their viewers.”
He continued: “[CNN] got virtually everything wrong on the Mueller report; they predicted everything wrong, and their viewers suffer, and when their viewers are denied my voice and the voice of other people to present a somewhat different narrative, it’s just a terrible thing.”
The attorney had previously called out Democrats for their baseless campaign to oust the president.
“Many Democrats – including some constitutional law professors – now argue that President Trump can be impeached without evidence of high criminal acts,” Dershowitz wrote in a September commentary for The Hill. “Some took the opposite view when President Clinton was being impeached, [but] hypocrisy aside, there are good historical reasons why the impeachment approach of the Democrats is wrong.”
The Ivy League professor contended Democrats have virtually nothing credible on which to base their argument to impeach Trump.
“… The case for impeaching President Trump based on the available evidence is extremely weak,” Dershowitz pointed out in his op-ed. “The phone call to the president of Ukraine may have been ill-advised – but that is a judgment for voters to make. There is nothing in the call that even approaches the constitutional criteria for impeachment and removal of a president.”
In fact, he concluded, the Democrats are trying to “weaponize” the U.S. Constitution for partisan purposes. AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebook2.8KShare to TwitterTwitterShare to EmailEmailShare to MoreMore64
