PTC goes to FCC over ‘The Mick’

"The Mick"The Parents Television Council is asking the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission to enforce the broadcast indecency law.

For the first time in two years the PTC has filed a formal FCC complaint for broadcast indecency violation after an episode of “The Mick.”

“The Mick” is a Fox sitcom in which irresponsible adult Mickey (Kaitlin Olson) is raising her niece and nephews. The show is rated TV-14.

Parents Television Council filed the complaint after a May 2 episode included graphic sexual dialogue.

PTC president Tim Winter says a word was used on the sitcom that he can’t repeat.

Winter

“It was one of (late comedian) George Carlin’s famous ‘seven dirty words you can’t say on television,’” says Winter, “and yet a child character is saying it to her irresponsible guardian on the show, at a time when children are known to be watching.”

The show is rated appropriate for children and Winter says Fox should be fined by the FCC.  He notes that FCC Chair Ajit Pai, a Republican, has stated publicly that the FCC will enforce the broadcast indecency law.

But what if the FCC doesn’t act in this case?

“Then I really do fear what the next instance will be [from Hollywood],” says Winter, “because we know it’s going to be a lot more brash and explicit then this episode was.”

Media watchdog Newsbusters recounts the May 2 scene, and other questionable story lines, in a story here.

Winter is also alarmed that fast-food chains Taco Bell and KFC have advertised on “The Mick.”
