Graham blasts Obama’s gay rights monument plan
Calling it a “monument to sin”, the preacher claimed there are other groups that are more deserving of recognition, according to Christian Post.
“A monument to sin? That’s unbelievable. War heroes deserve a monument, our nation’s founding fathers deserve a monument, people who have helped to make America strong deserve a monument — but a monument to sin?” Graham said in a social media post.
The commemoration is supposed to be put up in Manhattan near the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. There is a large gay community there. In 1969, protests were held after police raided the bar.
President Obama may give the monument official recognition as part of the National Park Service next month. Graham hopes he will change his mind.
“I can’t believe how far our country has digressed. I hope that the president will reconsider. Flaunting sin is a dangerous move. God’s Word tells us, ‘Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people,’ (Proverbs 14:34),” he wrote.
Federal officials including Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Interior Secretary Sandy Jewell will hold a listening session May 9 to get feedback on the idea, as reported by the Washington Post.
In April, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation supported by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to allow the city to transfer ownership of the land to the government for the monument.
