Israel Strikes Sites Near Damascus

September 22, 2017
According to media reports, Israeli aircraft have struck targets, including weapons depots used by Hezbollah and the Syrian Army, near the airport in Damascus.
A Syrian television station believed to be aligned with the government of Bashar al-Assad first reported the attack. It was followed a short time later by social media posts of explosions happening at or near the airport.
The Israel Defense Forces, as of this writing, have not yet confirmed the attack. The Haaretz newspaper, however, is reporting:
According to unverified reports, Syria’s aerial defense responded to Israeli aircraft in the area. Hezbollah has not yet commented on the alleged incident.
In recent years, there have been many attacks attributed to Israel in the area of Damascus International Airport. Apparently, arms depots are located around the airport, which are stocked with weapons from Iran on their way to Hezbollah.
According to one observer, it appeared the attacks were precipitated by Syrian air defenses shooting down an Israeli drone. The strikes were reportedly carried out by F-16B fighters that fired their missiles while still in Israeli airspace.
If these reports are correct, this would be the third time in two weeks Israel has struck targets inside Syria. It would be the first such attack since Russia announced it would use “any means” to retaliate against attacks aimed at Syrian Army units with embedded Russian advisers.
