The American Humanist Association (AHA) went to court in another case where it is trying to stop public school children in Colorado from volunteering to pack Operation Christmas Child boxes for needy children.

Kristina Arriaga, who serves as the executive director with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, is standing up – with her legal group – for the students’ right to participate.

“They believe that exposing the children to anything that could be considered religious is [akin to] exposing the children to ‘secondhand smoke,’” Arriaga argued. “And they believe the entire United States should think like they do – that religion is inherently bad for you.”

The legal expert says that despite the fact the humanists have never won any lawsuits of this nature, they are still able to intimidate schools.

“Many school districts are unaware of First Amendment issues – or they get concerned when they get these letters from activist atheist organizations,” Arriaga contends. “So, many times, we at Becket don’t hear about those cases until it’s too late.”

Arriaga pointed out that every year Becket bestows “The Ebenezer Award” to a person or organization trying to take religion out of the holidays, and this year, it was given to the American Humanist Association.
