V = Ventriloquist, D = Dummy (You may have something else to put in the parenthesis).
V: (Good evening)
D: _____________(silence)
V: Say good evening, (José)
D: Good evening, (José)
V: Great!
D: That’s what he said to say wasn’t it?!
V: Let’s try it a different way: It’s great to see you could make it tonight, José.
D: Make what?!
V: You know what I mean, that you could be here with us.
D: It’s great to be anywhere, you keep me locked up in that suit case all the time.
V: Oh, it couldn’t be that bad in there.
D: Yea, would you like to try it?
V: (José), I’m kind of curious . what do you want to be when you grow up?
D: Retired.
V: Retired?! How would you live if you didn’t work?
D: Same way you do!!
V: Seriously now, (José), we don’t have a lot of time, and I’m sure the people here want
to know what you want to do with your life. What do you want to be?
D: Close to God!
V: What a wonderful ambition!
D: Yea, I want to hear God’s voice and have His guidance in my life.
V: You’ll never regret this ambition.
D: Yea, but how I do it is another thing.
V: What do you mean? How do you hear God’s voice, and have His direction in your
life?
D: Yea, that’s what I mean!
V: That is a good question, (José), but there was a little boy in the Bible who heard
God’s voice. Do you suppose these people would be able to guess his name.
D: No, they’re a bunch of dummies!
V: (José), that’s not nice to call someone a dummy!
D: You call me a dummy!
V: That’s because that is what you are, you are a ventriloquist dummy.
D: See, there he goes again calling me a dummy, that’s not nice!
V: Now, calm down, we said we were going to be serious, and I think if we give them a
chance someone can think of who the little boy in the Old Testament was who heard
God’s voice. Does any one think they know? His name starts with a “S”__________.
Yes, it was Samuel, but did you know that before Samuel was even born, his mother
Hannah, couldn’t have children?
D: Well, how did she have Samuel then?
V: That’s what I’m going to explain, she couldn’t have any children, but she prayed to
God, and she might have prayed something like this: “Oh”, God if only you will give
me a baby boy, I will give the child to your service. Well, God respected and
answered such an unselfish prayer as that, and she did, she had a little baby boy and
she named him.
D: Samuel
V: But do you know what Samuel means?
D: No, what does it mean?
V: “Samuel” means “ask of God.”
D: That was a good name.
V: Yes, because Hannah had asked God for him hadn’t she? Hannah remembered the
promise she had made to God, and took the child Samuel to the tabernacle, that was
kind of like the church in those days. There, Samuel grow up serving God. But, one
night while Samuel was lying in bed he heard a voice calling, “Samuel.”
D: Who was calling?
V: Don’t get ahead of me, (José), Samuel went to the priest, Eli, who was taking care of
him, and said “here I am”, but Eli said that he hadn’t called and he hadn’t heard
anything.
D: He had his TV set on too loud.
V: They didn’t have TVs then, (José). Again he heard the voice, and went to Eli who
said he hadn’t called. Samuel heard the voice a third time and do you know what
happened?!
D: Eli threw one of his shoes at the kid?
V: No! No! of course not.
D: Eli threw two shoes at the kid?
V: Aaaaaaagh. No! He didn’t throw his shoes at Samuel.
D: Eli couldn’t find his shoes?
V: No, Eli told him the next time he heard the voice to say, “Speak, Lord, for your
servant is listening.”
D: It was God talking! How wonderful!
V: Yes, and Samuel was able to do many wonderful things in his life, because he could
hear God’s voice.
D: How can I hear God’s voice?
V: You do all the time.
D: I do?
V: Yes, you hear His voice when you go to (Sunday School), and Church. There you
hear God’s voice in the songs and hymns that are sung, in the Bible story, and
memory verses. You hear God’s voice in the sermon, testimonies and prayers. One
of the reasons Samuel may have heard God’s voice was because he was in a place
something like a Church. If you are a Christian and attended a good Bible believing
Sunday School and Church regularly, read your Bible and pray every day, you will
find God speaks to you in all these different ways.
D: I want to hear God’s voice actually talking, so I can know what to do.
V: (José), even though you don’t hear God speaking to you in the same way He spoke to
Samuel, just remember these different ways God does speak to you today, and try to
stay close to God every moment of every day of your life. When you come to the end
of your life and look over your life, you will see how God was leading you all
the way. OK, it is time to put you back into your suit case.
D: Just a second.
V: Now, what do you want?
D: I want to tell the people goodbye.
V: OK
D: Goodbye, it has been real fun being here with you, he’s going to put me back into that old suitcase again.
V: It couldn’t be that bad in there.
D: Yea, would you like to try it?
(Put dummy in the suit case, and make it look like his/her finger is hurt.)
You got my finger!
V: I’m sorry, you all right now?
D: Can I have some water?
V: No, you might wet your suit case!
