Earlier this month, officials with a Staten Island grade school (PS 65) said they had no choice but to delay their annual father-daughter dance (scheduled for February 9) until they are sure it doesn’t violate new guidelines from the NY Department of Education supporting transgender and gender-nonconforming students. Those guidelines direct schools to eliminate any gender-based practices – like the dance – that don’t serve a “clear” educational purpose.

Annabelle Rutledge, communications assistant for Concerned Women for America, is concerned how the guidelines might affect family relationships.

“[This] father-daughter dance [is] an extremely wholesome activity and it’s encouraging a relationship between a dad and a daughter,” she begins. “Anything that supports that relationship is good for our country [and] for our families – and when we take that away, we’re tearing down that foundation.”

Even though this so far involves just one school in one district in one state, Rutledge doesn’t want to see this become a trend.

“… I hate to see our culture lose that [tradition]; I think there’s so much value [in it] – and I don’t want to see it twisted into a political platform for this agenda,” she shares. “So I sincerely hope that this doesn’t become a trend in our schools.”

Columnist Todd Starnes reports that parents are furious because they see this as the school’s “capitulation to political correctness and militant sex and gender revolutionaries.”

CBS New York reported that the dance has been postponed until March, when individuals of all gender identities will be able to attend.
