Spike in attacks in India may draw international focus
This past Easter holiday was a very difficult one for believers in India. International Christian Concern documented that between Palm Sunday and Easter, ten attacks took place. ICC regional manager William Stark says there were likely many more attacks than what they could confirm.
“I’m sure really the ten that we documented were just the tip of the iceberg,” he says, “so I would say this past Easter has been one of the more difficult holiday periods for Christians in recent years.”
Stark tells OneNewsNow that he hopes that more publicity of these attacks by Hindu radicals on Christians will catch the attention of other governments.
“A lot of countries in the international community are becoming more interested, or perhaps the better word is more concerned, about India and the religious freedom violations that are going on there,” he shares.
“So hopefully we’re kind of hitting a critical moment where enough attacks are happening and enough violence is happening that the international community is standing up, taking notice, and starting to call India out on its religious freedom violations.”
ICC reports that Hindu radicals across India have been given a wide berth by local authorities to pursue their campaigns of hate against Christians and other minorities. It cites a recent report from the Evangelical Fellowship of India that more than 350 incidents of Christian persecution were recorded last year – and an additional 60 already in 2018.
