American Family Association continues to boycott Target over the retailer’s policy allowing transgender individuals to use the bathroom or changing room of the gender in which they say they identify. While Target maintains it’s about “inclusivity,” AFA says the policy puts women and children at risk of sexual predators who take advantage of the policy. Police and news reports have popped up in various spots, leading AFA to say “bah, humbug” to Christmas shopping at Target.
“We’ve kept a detailed list of incidences that unfortunately continue to happen there, and Target’s unwillingness to adjust their policy just simply states that they really don’t care about the safety of our women and our girls,” says AFA’s public policy analyst, Abraham Hamilton III.
Hamilton contends the boycott is having an effect on Target’s bottom line.
“Since we launched our boycott back in April, Target’s stock price has plummeted about 20 percent,” he explains. “They’ve lost billions of dollars in sales; [and] foot traffic at their stores has decreased significantly, so much so to where several top-level executives are no longer employed with Target.”
Earlier this year, Target executives met with AFA representatives. No changes were made. Hamilton later traveled to a Target shareholders meeting. Target has announced plans to add single-stall restrooms to stores that lack those options, but AFA says that wasn’t new.
“In May, Target publicized and told us personally that they were adding single-stall restrooms to the rest of their stores,” AFA’s Walker Wildmon says. “We told them when we met with them that this does not address our main concern because their policy still allows men access to women’s restrooms and changing rooms.”
As of last week, AFA’s “Boycott Target” petition had more than 1.4 million signatures.
