Is order on religious liberty on the NDP agenda?
Faith leaders gathering Thursday in Washington, DC, on the National Day of Prayer may be witness to a historic step in the area of religious liberty.
Politico is reporting that part of the festivities at the White House tomorrow could include the ceremonial signing of an executive order, an early draft of which (leaked in early February) would have established “broad exemptions for people and groups to claim religious objections under virtually any circumstances.”
Applauded by conservatives and evangelicals, that draft also drew criticism from liberals as well as the LGBT community who argued it amounted to government-licensed discrimination.
Since that time, says Politico, Vice President Mike Pence and “a small team of conservative allies” have been working to revise the language in the order. Reportedly, though, the language hasn’t been tweaked much at all from the February version and, in fact, remains “very, very strong,” according to someone who has seen the text.
