4-year-old left abandoned in desert by human smugglers
March 15, 2017
A four-year-old girl is in Department of Health and Human Services custody after being abandoned by human smugglers. U.S. Customs and Border agents say they found the girl alone Sunday morning near the California town of Mt. Signal.
Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim said in a statement that he was sickened “someone would leave a child that young to fend for herself.”
The girl was found after agents saw a group of people illegally crossing into California. A little while later, they saw the little girl in the same area all by herself. According to the San Diego NBC affiliate, she had a Guatemalan birth certificate and information about the location of her parents in her hand. She seemed to be in good health.
The child was taken to the El Centro Sector station in southern California. She was interviewed by agents who verified that she was a citizen of Guatemala. She was then turned over to the Department of health and Human Services where she will await her immigration status disposition.
