Applying international pressure on behalf of Asia Bibi
Asia Bibi, the Christian mother in Pakistan who recently had her blasphemy conviction overturned after spending eight years on death row, has yet to be released from the country.
The international community has applied pressure on the Pakistani government to grant Bibi (pictured) and her family a safe exit from the country. More than 230 parliamentarians from countries across the political spectrum have signed an open letter to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan urging action while voicing support for Bibi and concern for her safety.
Andreas Thonhauser is director external relations for the global human rights organization, ADF International, which contends that Bibi’s life is in danger every moment she remains in Pakistan.
“We know that this kind of open letter is creating more and more pressure on Pakistan – and especially on the government – not to give in to terrorist threats or fundamentalistic threats and people who are threatening violence in the streets but to really do what is right to let Asia Bibi and her family go,” he tells OneNewsNow.
Although it has been reported that some countries are willing to grant Bibi asylum, Thonhauser explains that countries may actually be reluctant to do so because of the extremists. For example, OneNewsNow reported over the weekend that officials in Britain “buckled” under the pressure of militant Muslims and refused to grant asylum.
Thonhauser suggests that an extremely important issue is at stake in the case of Asis Bibi and her family. “…Do we let ourselves be blackmailed by fundamentalists, by people threating with terror and then sort of try to be compliant with them instead of with what is right and what is the law?” he asks.
The ADF International spokesman asks for prayer for Bibi and her family as it has “been a roller coaster ride of many years.”
