A former science teacher turned state legislator has introduced legislation to keep biological males out of women’s athletes.
The Mississippi Fairness Act was introduced by Republican State Senator Angela Hill. “It’s just not fair for biological females in a supposedly all-female team to have biological males decide that they want to come in and appear as a female and then compete against the females and dominate their sports,” she tells OneNewsNow.
Senator Hill has ten co-authors on Senate Bill 2240, and most of them are male.
Meanwhile, the Republican lawmaker isn’t aware of any instances in Mississippi where a biological male was competing against biological females in women’s sports.
“But it will happen – and it’s better to be proactive than reactive,” she continues. “We don’t need these schools hanging in the balance … having to deal with this without us giving them some guidance, saying that we’re going to protect you and that you’re going to protect female sports.”
Mississippi isn’t the only state with such legislation. A similar bill is advancing in Arizona, and Hill says measures have been filed in a number of states. “Some states already have a clear policy,” she shares, “[and] Mississippi is one that does not, so that is why … we want to close the door.”
Jameson Taylor, Ph.D. of the Mississippi Center for Public Policy likes the legislation.
“Girls deserve to compete on a level playing field, and that’s why federal law requires equality for women’s sports through Title IX. This has been the law for 50 years,” he points out. “Now we are seeing biological males make a mockery of these federal protections and steal opportunities and scholarships from women.”
Last week, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed a federal lawsuit in Connecticut on behalf of three female athletes who say the Connecticut Athletic Association’s policy allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports has created an unlevel playing field and resulted in their losing out on championship titles, medals, awards, etc.
It was also reported last week that upcoming U.S. Olympic Marathon trials will include, for the first time ever, a biological male who identifies as a woman.
