Writer/creator proudly unashamed of morality-based cartoons
Kendra White of American Family Studios is co-creator and co-writer of the “Ryan Defrates: Secret Agent” series. With six episodes under her belt – and many more on the way – White recently came across criticism from left-leaning websites, one of which ranks the series “somewhere between Christianist indoctrination and child abuse.” And a pro-LGBT website disparages the cartoon series as “homosexual-free.”
“I read the criticism and I was like, ‘Our little cartoon is stirring up trouble?'” responds White. “I didn’t know how a story about a spy and his mom could cause so much controversy.”
White points out that the word “doctrine” is in indoctrination. “And you know what? I’m guilty as charged in that,” she continues.

“There are some doctrines that I’ve taken from Scripture that I do think need to be in children today – and I hope that they do come away with these moral lessons. So, yeah … guilty as charged!”
In a related blog for AFA’s “The Stand,” White says the LGBTQ worldview is widespread in media intended for youngsters, including a number of recent “firsts” on Disney Channel.
“There were animated same-sex couples kissing on screen, and two mommies appearing at the door for a playdate. It’s just everywhere,” she laments. “And I don’t believe that sexuality is something that children should have to process – and if so, it’s up to parents to have those conversations.”
The website for “Ryan Defrates: Secret Agent” includes resources for families to download, print, and discuss. Each episode of the series concludes with a Bible story, building off that episode’s theme, such as selflessness, joy, and patience.
“The newest episodes are really fun,” White adds. “We have a new villain, a greedy pirate; and we have an episode where you get a little bit of information about Ryan’s dad; and then we also have a special Christmas episode, which is a whole lot of fun.”
