VP Pence Suddenly Clears His Schedule

August 17, 2017
Vice President Mike Pence cut short his trip to South America in order to return to the U.S. for a meeting Friday at Camp David that will reportedly focus on North Korea.
The vice president also cut short his time with South American leaders. His deputy chief of staff, Jarrod Agen, said the remainder of his weekend schedule had been cleared in case the president needed any follow up briefings.
Among those weekend events was a campaign rally for Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie. Some tried to initially equate the cancelation with a difference of opinions over the Confederate monuments issue that has now consumed the liberal mainstream media, but Gillespie’s position is nearly identical to President Donald Trump’s—a position Pence twice defended publicly.
The question few in the media seem to be asking is why might the president want to have an important meeting with his top advisers about North Korea when the situation was supposedly defused. The Washington Examiner, however, reports administration officials are concerned about the breakneck pace at which the Hermit Kingdom is advancing its missile program.
But, there could be more to discuss than North Korea, the report concludes:
Trump’s national security team itself has also been the subject of scrutiny in recent weeks amid a dispute between national security adviser H.R. McMaster and chief strategist Steve Bannon, both of whom have pushed the president in different directions on issues ranging from the Iran nuclear agreement to troop levels in Afghanistan.
The president last spent time at Camp David in June when he hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping over Father’s Day weekend.
