Little Sisters of the Poor Back in Court Again
November 22, 2017
Attorneys general in California and Pennsylvania are attempting to overturn President Donald Trump’s executive order that provides for religious exemptions from Obamacare’s contraceptive mandate. The nuns, whose mission involves serving the elderly poor, don’t want to be forced to purchase health insurance coverage that violates their deeply held religious beliefs.
In doing so, they have effectively argued, they are contributing funds that go into a pool to pay for abortifacient contraceptives for secular businesses’ employees’ health insurance coverage. Although they are not the subject of the Pennsylvania and California lawsuits, they have announced they will intervene in them as interested parties who could be effected by the outcome.
The Little Sisters of the Poor are represented by attorneys from the nonprofit Beckett Fund. The Washington Free Beacon has noted that both California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro have received thousands of dollars in campaign donations from Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.
